A quick how-to for installing an aftermarket gauge in your Phase I (1988-1990) dash. An air/fuel gauge was used in this how-to.
- The gauge you wish to install
- Rubber band (usually included with gauge, at least with Autometer)
- Shoe Polish
- Razor blade
- Hole saw, size depends on size of gauge
Step 1
The dash material is just a hard plastic covered with foam padding and a vinyl covering on top of that. First mark the center of the area that you wish to place the gauge.
Step 2
Measure the diameter of the BACK of the gauge, so that it will sit inside the hole with the lip holding it from falling in.
Step 3
Carefully, but with a high-speed drill so that it cuts through the vinyl, instead of ripping or pulling it, cut a hole straight into the dash. Then you will want to ream it out with the razor so that it is smooth.
Step 4
Follow the instructions included with your gauge to get it properly wired up.
