How to Install White Faced Gauges

How To Do It
Before you start anything make sure you have a full tank of gas, and that your car is completely cool so that you know the resting position of the Fuel, Oil Pressure & Temp gauges. Take a photo of the cluster, or make yourself a diagram if you are afraid you won't get them back in the same location. The speedometer and tach are self resetting, so no matter where you put the needles back on, they will reset to the correct location.
Remove the gauge cluster from your car as outlined in the Gauge Bulbs How-to. Then remove the cover from the gauge pod by removing the many #10 torx screws on the back side. While you have things apart, you might want to check your bulbs for ones that are burnt out.
Now you need to carefully pop off the needles. The best tool for this is amazingly, a kitchen fork! Slide the tines of the fork under the needle and around the shaft. Carefully pry straight up in the needle to pop it off, being carefully not to break anything or bend the shaft. The needles are a tight friction fit, but slowly & surely you can slide them up and off.
Once you have all the needles off, you need to remove the old gauge face. A butter knife works great for this. Slide the knife under the thin plastic face to cut through the glue holding it on. Be careful, because you will need to slide the knife around the shafts that the needles were on, so don't get carried away and saw through or bend the shafts.
Now for the fun part; installing the new face. Use a little bit of glue on the back of the new face to hold it in position. There will probably be some sticky residue left over from the old face, so you shouldn't need much glue. Regular old Elmer's will do fine. Drop the new face into position and center it on the pod.
Now you can carefully re-install the needles. Use your diagram, photo or memory to get the back in the right position. Remember that the speedo and tach will reset automatically. Push the needles down far enough to seat them, but not so far that they hit the face and bind up.
Before you re-install the plastic cover, it might be a good idea to install the cluster in your car and turn the key to "run". Make sure all the needles are where you expected them to be. If not, carefully pry the offending needle back off and re-position it until it sits correctly. The tach and speedo should be OK, but if you're afraid you messed something up, start the car, or go drive around for a while to make sure they are functioning properly.
