Here's the situation. My brother told me his friend was selling his z26 with a 3.1 in it. I asked him if it was a 3.1 or a 3100 and he wasn't sure but thinks its the same as mine in the cavi. He doesn't know what year it is even. But looking at timing chain sets is there really much difference between 3.1 and 3100 timing sets? Look identical to me but that's just pictures. Does one have an advantage over the other? One cheaper in general? Anyways I can buy this car for $400. He said it was missing and still after replacing spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, and some other things. His mechanic that he brought it to said it was the timing chain. How much damage to the motor is there if it's just missing but still runs?

There is probably no damage since it did not break yet. Timing chain sets run about $20-$30. Unless you want performance they go from $40-$200 depending on the company. They do sell super hi performance ones that are like 2 or 3 inches thick that are $800 plus but I have never see anyone run one, and I do not see a point. There are some hex-adjust ones at are $120ish if you want to be able to adjust it. SBC are around $120-160. OEM replacements are $20-$30. I also pretty sure gen 2 and gen3 are different and not interchangeable. The prices were for 3100.

If it is a 3.1 orielly's has a complete set for $39. But how good is the Cloye's brand? I can also get sealed power chain for $31 or milling for $25 for just the chains.

all good name brands. I would definatly get the whole set, not just the chain, but im gonna guess its prob something else thats wrong like an icm or coil or inj.

I'm gonna go look at it if I end up not working tonight. Maybe it's something small yet not so obvious. Loose plug, bad ground, plugged fuel filter, even though he said he changed the fuel filter I'm not gonna go by his word.

Ok so I looked at the car a couple times. First time I couldn't start it due to a dead battery and lack of time. Went back later with jumpers and tried to start it. It still has good compression from the sound of it turning over but no fire. Listened for the fuel pump and nothing. No fuel pressure. One thing I'm leaning towards is water in the tank seized up the fuel pump. The filler neck rusted off where you put the gas cap on so it's been open to the elements for the past couple months. And it is a 3100 not a 3.1. I knew it. Even though the guy insisted over the phone that it was a 3.1 not a 3100. lol. I don't think he knew the difference. Anyways gonna go get it tomorrow. $400, gonna offer him $300 or $350 since i need to replace the fuel pump now too. Gonna strap tow it to my buddys garage and get to work. Wish me luck.

That doesnt help. my problem is there is no timing mark on the cam sprocket. theres a hile like 3/8 diameter but i doubt thats it. I found the mark on the crank gear just fine but shouldnt the cam gear have the same mark? It dont. someone have a picture?

The whole, you put an alignment pin through the circle and into the block. That is how you light it up.

Well after being up all night i finally got it all put back together. Even dropped the tank and replaced the fuel pump. Had to cut the strap bolts off and get bolts and nuts to replace them.

BTW here's some pics.
