I have this problem on my turbo 3100 in my fiero and resently noticed a few instances of smoke that are not easy to duplicate, I thought the turbo was worn out after 3yrs of pounding but leaky seals in a turbo are pretty consistent when they are on their way out especially if you creep up to 6k on the rpm gauge. So I suspect my piston slap is now becoming the tell tell sign of pending doom.

This is probably the cause of skirt failures even when the noise is not readily audible inside and out of the vehicle like mine is.
