As the title says it...i'm getting code 42 on my 1992 2.8L Cavalier...the car itself runs pretty good, but if i erase the code, it will have problems to keep running on low rpm's,specially when braking at a stoplight for 1 or two days, then the code comes on and the car will run "normally".So before trying to remove the ICM,is there any way to test the connections?i've already tested for spark, and there is.I've searched on the forum, but got nothing Any suggestions are welcome Also,i can't access the diagrams anymore, why is that?
-Solution-
Using these ECM pin-out images:
http://www.v6z24.com/jbodyforum/ecm-pin-out-diagrams-t99212.html
I followed this test:
http://www.fieros.de/en/v6help/code42.html
All it takes is a Voltmeter and get your way through to the ecm.
My problem was a grounded CKT 423,I ran a new wire to the ICM,and so far so good, thanks for your advises everyone.Hope the edit helps someone else with this code.

CODE 42
Trouble Code 42 indicates that there may be a malfunction in the Electronic Spark Timing (EST) system. During cranking, the timing is controlled by the ignition module and the ECM grounds the EST line. It expects to see no activity on this line at this time. When the ECM enters EST mode, it applies +5 volts to the BYPASS line and expects to see voltage variations on the EST line.
Reasons for the ECM to set Code 42:
? System in BYPASS mode (i.e. EST line supposedly grounded) but activity sensed on EST line
? System in EST mode (i.e. BYPASS line driven with +5 volts) but no activity seen on the EST line
Possible causes include:
1. BYPASS line is open or grounded
2. EST line is open or grounded
3. Poor connections between ignition module and ECM
4. Poor routing of EST harness and/or poor quality ignition wires (EMI induced electrical noise
5. Faulty or incorrect ignition module
6. Faulty ECM

I fixed this issue on a car I was flipping, it was the ICM in that case. I got one pretty cheap from a salvage yard, they run around 150 locally new.
Take off the ICM with coils attached and have them test it at a parts store. Run it through a few times to get it heated up, often times they need to be warm to start screwing up.
Check all your connections and wires to your CPS -> ICM, I melted some on my 3.4 swap and it caused intermittent issues, but I doubt on a 2.2 that would have happened. _________________

people swap 2.8 with 3.1 and vise versa all the time when there is major engine problems. There will be no noticeable difference in performance and all hook up the same. _________________

agreed
but honestly i prefer the phase one USDM Z24s over anything, honestly alot of the mexican versions of chevy cars are slapped together imo, for example 86 monte ss on ebay, all orig but had a factory 307 and a t5 but elcamino dash? and weird wheels... looked so stupid |
