I had a broken pipe bout rear seat ish for bout an hour once on a 2.8 around 2500-2700 it sounded like the bbc 427 in my dads old dump truck with straight pipes. With 2.5 pipe, high flo cat, tuned single in dual out stainless muffler, and a 3400 with my foot in it it was deffinatly louder than a sbc.

ill gladly give anyone demostraitions of noise levels
Hell go to a local test and tune and listen to any lt/ls f-body's with FULL exhaust or cutouts and tell me its quieter than a 3x series v6
I think most you think its so loud because just the mid type tone a v6 makes resonates pretty loud with most exhaust systems. Same concept as those little shit car 4 cylinders with the fart cans make that gawd awfull loud ear piercing buzz that makes me want to put a bullet in my head. Thats why i say, open man/header to open man/header, its not louder.

Come to the bash next year and i'll prove you wrong.
Here is one example..
http://videos.streetfire.net/video/V6-Z24-14-mile_176252.htm
a 3rd gen Fbody running mid 12's.. he was running a 3" single system and yet.. all you can hear is my V6

ill agree i race at 4000 ft and the V8s running in the 13 -14 are way louder then the two in that video and that is like 11.5-13 at sea level

Had a similar experience with my mothers 89 Oldsmobile Cutless with the 2.8L. The whole muffler blew out when I was on the highway about 40 mins from home and by the time I got home my head was pounding and my ears were ringing. Sounded exactly how you put it. Got lucky I didn't get stopped by a trooper.
