Trying to get A/C again on the 3500Z. Replaced all wear and tear parts and ordered a rebuilt compressor.

I was getting ready to pull a vacuum, just had to install the compressor. And to my despair, I realized that this A/C compressor mounted differently than my stock one.

It is a V5 Compressor, but it must be for a different model vehicle.

It still has 3 mounting bosses on it, and will bolt in, however the way it mounts makes it impossible to install the refrigerant hoses, the compressor mounts upside down, with the drain bolt facing up.

Now my question is, Is it possible to Clock the mounting bosses? By taking the casing apart maybe?

EDIT

In this link, it looks like it can be clocked, by loosening the 6 bolts that hold the case together, and rotating, can anyone confirm this?

Well, not even the internet could turn up an answer.

You cannot clock the V5 Casing. The compressor only goes together one way. The part of the compressor with the mounting ears must have been cast differently depending on what application (Mounting down low or up high) the compressor would be used for.

But, my solution to this was to take apart the compressor, and use the casing with the mounting ears off my old compressor. That is the only part that is different and it will fit.

So by taking the mounting case off my old compressor, and putting it on my new compressor, I've converted it to the style I need.

Thanks for letting us know what will work. And also thanks for posting a link to the teardown tutorial. Great information form both.

Thought I would post another revelation...

After getting the mounting issue fixed, I tried pulling my first vacuum. Needless to say, it did not hold vacuum for very long.

I replaced all orings. As I checked them, it seems a few of the orings were the wrong thickness, so I corrected that, thinking that would be the cause for the leaks.

Even after that, i had a small leak. Well the last connection I checked was the suction-discharge hose that connects to the back of the compressor. Thats when it hit me. The old compressor I had used sealing washers, The rebuilt compressor used orings instead. I used sealing washers, and o rings!

Here are some useful links I came across. Seems like they stopped using the Oring style in 90, and 91+ used sealing washers.

http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/kb/questions/83/1988+-+1992%3A+Service+Bulletin%3A+A%7B47%7DC+Compressor+Sealing+Washer+%28New+Design%29

http://www.truckair.com/catalog/2008PDFs/018-Tools_Orings08.pdf

Since I used the sealing washers as well, I damaged the Orings. I replaced the orings with new Green Orings and I'm pulling vacuum right now. I'll update if it holds.

Yeeeesh...

I have played around with the idea of a 3400 swap in my new Z, but as a DD I felt leaving it stock would give me more reliability and AC. Working with the AC components is a huge PIA.

As long as you leave the A/C alone during your swap, it will be ok. Mine was working after my swap, but it was time for an overhaul, as it needed freeon refills monthly...

Well, after a few hours and a few wasted cans of R134a, I was getting pretty pissed. I couldn't get the freeon in the system. Then I found this,

http://www.v6z24.com/jbodyforum/a-c-compressor-clutch-not-engaging-t51100,highlight,jump++compressor.html

And after two cans, at idle, my vent temps are at 58 degrees. And I believe I need another can.

Lets hope this lasts!

That thread is helpful. My A/C compressor clutch isn't working and the system is dry too. No telling how long it has been out. Anyway, I'd like to try to charge it and get it working.

But,,, I don't know what type freon it takes? All my old cars took R12, I think it was. I don't know if an 88 still used R12 or the R134. I am guessing (from reading the thread) that it takes R12 and I have to do a retrofit so I can switch to R134.
I'm thinking this is what I probably need:

You'll need to evac the system and pull a vacuum. Then, you have to screw on the adaptors and fill with the 134a and ester oil.
