so i stopped and looked at a car im thinking about picking up. its a 1991 cavalier Rs 3.1 auto Convertible.
black with grey interior,
aftermarket 15" rims brand new tires.
has small surface rust on the quarters
he said something about not shifting right after getting off the highway, so im assuming it needs a tcc,
he said there was no other problems with it, i drove it, and it misses, runs great just has a miss, and looking aroun i noticed it needed LIM gaskets. possibly some more work
top is in good condition, no cracks rips tears etc.
has 98000 miles.
not sure what i should offer, i know im never giving him the asking price tho.. _________________

No more than $2000. You did say it had aftermarket wheels and new tires. If the wheels don't look that decent, lower the expected price. _________________

Thats way too much if it misses. Unless you can tell its a secondary ignition problem. Often misfires are caused by far more serious ailments. I would be concerned. _________________

.......... I paid $1100 for my 91Z not convertible, I guess it had 210,000kms but it ran fine and had a bit of rust on the driver side rear lip, never gave me problems until I parked it, I think it hated me for buying the VW _________________

well remember the verts are worth more than the coupes and actually going up in value at a pretty decent rate right now. But if it's missing (which almost always is something stupidly simple to fix) and having other issues I wouldn't go any higher than $1500 tops. and that would mean everything thing else is in great shape cosmetically and such. _________________

well, it misses, i know for sure it needs lower intake gaskets, and possibly a tcc solenoid. i called last night, to offer him 1200, she said her husband was out of state for mothers day, an he would call me back tonight after work. _________________

Problem cars no matter what they are decrease the value significantly. Because you have to recoup the retail value of the fix then some. So yea $1000 or so seems alright if the car is otherwise solid. Locally (mind you this is the south where rust is uncommon on local cars) a 1993 Z24 convertible in excellent shape fully functional basically needed nothing went for $2800. Verts hold a certain premium over non-verts of any car line especially Cavaliers where a 4 cyl 2 or 4 door were a dime a dozen and nothing to write home about. However convertibles and Z's in good shape can and will attract a lot of interest even if the price is still relatively modest. The upside is that Cavaliers are relatively easy and inexpensive to fix. That is part of the reason why I have kept mine all these years its basically costs me nothing as a part-time car for a little top down action. _________________
