Car dies when coming to a stop after cruising at highway speeds and it will restart, but die the second you put it into drive. _________________

nope. It'll buck and stall like a manual car when coming to a stop because it stays engaged.
Given your symptoms above it sounds like your TV cable needs to be adjusted. Push the button on the cable and pull it out all the way then step on the gas pedal 100%. That should get it back to where its supposed to be. _________________

see thats what i don't understand....
saturday it was fine.... matter of fact my daughter & her hubby borrowed it early sunday morning (5 am) to go to er, daughter was hurt, her hubby told me yesterday it drove fine & gave him no trouble, but when i got in it yesterday afternoon, it would shift into 1st & 2nd (this is while it is in drive) & it would not shift into 3rd, but lastnight about 5 pm i was going down the road & it shifted into 3rd finally & then it looked & felt like the torque converter locked & all was ok, then 3 hours, or 4 which ever it was hours later it wouldn't shift into 3rd again.... i wound up adding a quart of tranny fluid to it & still no shift, then this morning when i drove away from my house it shifted into 3rd but torque converter never locked out... ok i can deal with that, but then about halfway to work (my 1 way commute is 50 miles) it acted up enough that i stopped & finished putting the quart of tranny fluid in it, i only put half a quart in it lastnight, then it seemed to be better but not going into locked tc still, ok i am ok with that for now, then another 15 miles down the road it started slipping in 3rd & I hit the service road the rest of the way to work, but a couple of miles from work, maybe 5 miles, it started slipping in 2nd & it would kick down into first if i stepped on the gas, but thats not good for my engine...
so i was able to limp it to work & i checked the fluid & it was full, so i guess it needed a quart after all, didn't smell burnt, was still red, not brown, now the fluid did smell hot , but not burnt (know what I mean)
so tell me, is it costly rebuild tranny time?
or would a fluid & filter change may be needed??
thanks _________________

It could still need the TV cable adjusted...that would be the quickest and easiest thing to try.
If you don't know if the trans fluid has ever been changed, I wouldn't mess with changing it. If it's had that fluid a while, you run the risk of having leaks pop up. _________________

ok i adjusted the TV cable yesterday (was easier than i thought it would be)
when i got off work, wouldn't shift right ....
once adjusted i was then without pushing the car hard able to get into 3rd gear, just no Lock Out...
but i ran along at 70 on the highway in 3rd no problem....
except i had to stop at a stop sign about 11 miles fom my home & when i took off the car would not shift into 3rd so i had to putt along in 2nd at 40 mph the last 11 miles of my trip...
then i let the car sit for like 15 minutes & then it would shift into 3rd, but still no lock out, this morning it went into all 3 gears no problem, still no lock out & I did my best to not push the tranny (ie read as no putting it into passing gear type of thing) & drove to work at 60 & 70 with no problem, just gas millage is down a little due to no lock out...
ok so what i wanna know is.... where is the TCC located at?
that way i can look for another one at the junkyard...
also on another note, just incase i do have to rebuild or replace the tranny (850.00 to 950.00 I was quoted yesterday for a rebuild, 300 less if i pull the tranny & carry it into them), will a TH125C from any front wheel drive GM car work, or does it have to come from a specific range of vehicles??? _________________

You don't want to buy a junkyard solenoid... it'll probly be worse than yours.
Sounds like your need to check your fluid levels before you do anything.
Turn the car on, go for a 10-15 minute drive until the engine is completely warmed up and then pull over and check the fluid level with the engine running (must do this step or you'll never get an accurate reading).
Add fluid accordingly. If the fluid on the dipstick is discolored brown then your tranny is probly in need of some TLC. If its still "pink/red" then the internals are most likely working fine.
You should be able to grab the TH125C out of any fwd that had it... but you goto be careful because the gearing might be different depending on the car you take it out of. Your best bet is to grab one ouf of another same engine size jbody.... they are fairly common and shouldn't be a problem locating. _________________

ok no tcc from a junkyard....
yeah now i have done that & it shows my fluid to be full, but i will check it again this evening about half way home maybe a little less...
if it shows full & pink red color than do you think just a fluid & filter change are in order to see if that helps it????
because prior to sunday morning when all this happened the tarnny has been great with no problems what so ever _________________

fluid and filter change won't hurt anything. And if it does start acting funny after... changing the fluid and filter won't have anything to do with it. _________________

Mine did the same thing, lost 3rd when warm/hot and would only go in to 3rd when cold. Eventually second gear started to get harder to get to go in to gear and it took 5000rpm's to make it shift in 2nd. Let it cool down, it would go through the gears no problem. So to save the hassle, I just put in a reman and called it a day.
Now I am looking for a 3t40 to handle more power... That is going to be tricky. _________________
