We finally got some time yesterday and today to do the cage in the cavy. The work is all happening at Berg Racing in Webster, NY. John made up the hoop and I did the hoop plates yesterday. Today we managed to get all of the rear section fabbed and tacked in. We still need to make door bars and finish tacking the rear part enough to be able to get it out of the car to do the final welds. Im hoping we can have it done monday or tuesday. With any luck painted by the end of the week.

I think we have about 6-7 hours into this so far.

Progress pics.

More to come.

Dan

Sweet. That really tucks right into the rockers. Mines out a bit further than that.

Ya, my sw kit was out a bit more two, halfway on the floor and half on that angled bend up towards the rocker. John didnt like that at all so when we made this hoop we kept it out more. The door bars are going to attach pretty much just like that right before the floor starts to curve up to the firewall.

wonderful pics dan, its always such a pleasure to see this kind of work! makes me want to get a start on mine.
just need to get everything else back running first

can you get more pictures of the front plates? looks from this angle like you couldnt even get the torch in to weld the pipe to the plate. sure its not the case but everything looks so tight.

edit * also what dimension pipe did you use?

I thought the door bars would contact almost at the firewall, and thats why I keep hemming and hawing about mine. Does the guy normally put them there? I guess I was thinking they would be farther forward to support the A pillar-to-firewall area.

All the joints are fully welded. Its just hard to tell from the pics. Ill snap some more tomorrow.

The cage is all 1.75" 0.095" wall DOM mild steel. Actually the rear diag brace is 1.5" (figured we would save a half a pound or so).

All in all this new cage is the same weight (60lbs) as my old SW kit which didnt have door bars, and only half a harness bar and no rear diag brace.

James,

I thought so too. However, the longer the bars are the weaker they are. So this ties things together nicely and keeps it manageable for the street too. Basically your bridging that space across the door, in front of that the car is fairly stiff on its own.

EDIT: also he mainly does full scca spec cages, not half cages. In which case he would put the front bars close to the firewall and then add an additional bar, or triangle of bars connected to the front wheel wells on the inside. Also there would be an X or nascar tyep bars for the doors.

Got it all finished primed and painted tonight. Took a couple hours to mask off the inside and some of hte outside (what a fn pain). Probably pull the masking off in the am, or at least peek thru the back window to see if I missed any first.

Few pics of the masking nonsense.

and after paint.

:Its not going to be completely gutted. Carpet and panels are going back in.

I pulled the paper off yesterday am and took a couple quick pics. There are a couple little spots that arent perfect, but whatever, its about as good as I can get it with the windows in.
