1994 Sunbird LE
|
|
my three speed auto is gettin old but my 2.0L 4 banger is still runnin pretty strong and the piston walls looked pretty clean last time i was in (bout 2 months ago)
but over the winter i would like to rebuild my engine and do the 5 speed swap
i have been researching the idea and lookin at 5 speed trans at online jy's
i read thru the swap how to bout 6 times now
is it the same for the 5speed in a 4 cylinder?
i found one online with 58xxx on it and they are asking for $450
that sound like a decent price?
its out of a 1994 sunbird so it should bolt up
but would i need the manual wiring harness and computer?
i've read that a few people (with the v6) have gotten away with auto harness and ecm
i'd like to start buying the parts i'd need for the swap in the next few months so i can get it swapped over in december while i'm home for xmas break
oh and i dunno if there is a difference in 4 cylinder 5 speed like the v6's (munice or NVG)
any help is greatly appreciated _________________

You can use the auto harness but you'll need to relocate/splice your NSS/VSS wires and possibly the reverse light connector. You should also get the MEMCAL from the manual car (the chip inside the ECM). It will plug into your auto ECM fine.
The steps in the V6 swap will also apply for the 4 cylinder swap. Just make sure you get all the "extra" parts like the rear bodyside mount bracket, your clutch/shifter/cables, etc.
The Getrag/NVG transmissions are a little more robust than the 4 cylinder Isuzu transmissions but I'm not sure that the ratios would work well for the 2.0 in the 'birds. _________________

well i was plannin on gettin all new engine mounts...just oem replacements along with tranny mounts
so the auto harness will work if i splice in the neutral switch and vss for speedo?
and the chip outta the manual for my auto ecm?
that was my only real worry about the swap
the rest is just unbolting stuff
is the isuzu the only 2.0 tranny that will bolt up?
the one i found online doesnt say brand and the email i got back from the guy was just about mileage and condition
helpful though thanks _________________

The bolt pattern on the 2.0 OHC is different than the 2.2/2.8/3.1, so make sure you get an Isuzu from a Sunbird if you want a direct bolt-in.
Mounts aren't all of it, you need the rear body bracket as well as it's different between auto/manual cars, at least in the V6 cars, not 100% sure about the 4 cylinder cars.
To use the auto harness, you need to either wire the NSS wires together or route them back to the switch on the clutch pedal. The VSS connector should be the same between auto/manual but the reverse light connector might be different. _________________

is the linkage all the same from 4 isuzu tranny and others?
and if not, is the linkage the same from 4 cyl trannies to other 4 cyl trannies?
my reason for asking is because there is a 4 cyl in the yard....convertible, 5spd, i think its like a 1992 or earlier because the engine is different from mine.....
but if i took the linkage off it and the other things beside the tranny would i be ok to use it when i find an isuzu tranny? _________________

The engine is different? Is it a Sunbird? If it is, it's the same engine with a different valve cover. Sunbirds all used 2.0 OHC AFAIK. The Cavaliers changed from 2.0 OHV to 2.2 OHV within the 2nd gen span.
If it's a 4 cylinder Sunbird, then it's quite likely it's the Isuzu transmission.

The FDR for the HM282 is 3.61 in the V6 J-bodies. It's 3.94 in the W41 HM282. _________________

alright
it is a 1992 sunbird convertible with a 5spd
so all the linkage and cables swap over then?
cause i am goin to the yard on tuesday to get all the stuff minus the tranny (it has 110k on it)
how difficult are the cables and linkage to get off?
i haven't checked the tranny very carefully but all the stuff in the center console, the shift stick, and center connsole itself are all intact _________________

The cables/linkage/shifter should work fine. Just be EXTREMELY careful when removing the console as they break easily.
The cables on the transmission end aren't terribly difficult to remove, might be easier in a 4 cylinder with more room to work in the bay. The shifter end can be a little trickier. I'd take the transmission end loose first then pull the carpet up, remove the metal plate around the cable grommet, then work on taking the shifter assembly out.
There are clips holding the shift cables in place, pull toward the shifter and up to remove them, then once the cables are out of the way, unbolt the 4 bolts holding the shifter down and pull it out. Just make sure you don't mutilate or break those clips...I had to go back to the yard and steal some others because I bent the hell out of one of mine. _________________
