Anything can be done... if you can figure out how to do it. I don't know but I think there is a problem with the store bought fuel mile gages from plugging into an OBD 1 car.
No one to my knowledge has done this as yet... probably because most people on here are trying to build fast cars. Well.. fuel mileage and built engines are, virtually, mutually exclusive.
However there are those of us that are trying to go the other way... looking to get the best possible mileage without sacrificing current (stock) performance standards.
I would be most interested in your findings.

I know that some "fuel mileage gauges are simply vaccum gauges. I've never seen one that plugs into the DLC

how about that cool ass display that GPs have?/ MY 03 GTP has this little screen that tells you fuel effeciency, oil life, mileage, how many miles worth off gas you have left, etc
How could one get that in their J?

Some old Cadillacs in the 80s and early 90s had fuel economy "estimators" in them. I'm not sure how they worked but I know my grandfather had several Caddys and it wasn't the most accurate.
Here's a photo of a 91 Seville STS fuel computer display (at the bottom of the dash below the climate controls):

Thats what I mean, I dont really need oil life or any of that crap just wanted to put something on the headliner. I thought since I built the motor for fuel economy Id put one in...It would be nice to know what kind of milage I get when Im pulling my trailer.
I was thinking of just taking one out of another car and modding it... but thats past my knowledge.

Cobsux may be on to something, the old ones might have just been a tap off the MAP sensor and be displaying the same thing that a manual economy vacuum gauge would say..
to accurately calculate MPG on the fly you'd need to be able to get MPH and Injector pulse width from the ECM and you'd have to know how many gallons/hr the injectors are. You'd need an ALDL connection running datalogging software with a $A1 code mask on a seperate computer to do all the calculations and display them in real time.
OBD2 systems have the programming to calculate all this and output it to a display, OBD1 does not.

Dug out the Cadillac diagrams..
Driver Information Center as it was called was run by a small stand-alone BCM. Had a feed from the ECM, the VSS and a some other crap. I only looked at an Eldorado, which was probably not the best one to look at, but it looks like it would be doable.

sounds like alot of work for something that prolly wouldnt be accurate
instead of putting time & $ into that how about you change the o2 sensor, air filter, fuel filter, plugs, check tire pressure, remove excess weight, and go 60mph on the highway when you can..
if your really concerned about MPG that is..
