Just started my 3400 swap was just wondering what you guy think about running 3.1 exhaust manifolds on the 3400 heads
What would be the problems and the down fall
the reason i want to is so i wont have to have a custom down pipe made and save a little money
I know there are a few people that did this is the past
and the would the chip i have burned need to be changed
thanks |

| the 3.1 manifolds would restrict the flow of the motor, the 3x00 log manifolds would be the best choice as they flow the best |

Us the 3400 log manifolds those 3.1 manifolds are so going to restrict. but they should not effect your tune just hurt your full performance. _________________

I ran them without problems, the engine still performed very well. I used new gaskets for the 3.1 on them and had no leaks.
the 3400's log manifolds suck too, they aren't much better than the 3.1 manifolds, _________________

| so you are saying i could use the 3.1 manifolds with the 3.1 manifolds gaskets and not have to have a custom downpipe made just bolt up wiith the one i have now |

Yep, bolt them up just like they were on the 3.1.
If you aren't going for all out power then this will be fine.. If/when you want to upgrade pick up a set of 3500 LX9 front manifolds.. those will net an easy 10 HP on a stock 3400 with a propper Y pipe and exhaust. _________________

3.1, i'm not sure how well the 3400 gaskets would seal to the shape of the older manifolds.. _________________

2" mandrel bent off of both manifolds, merged into 2.5" should do it.. for more low end grunt merge the 2" pipes into 2.25" pipe _________________

i thought i did a little big, but i went with 2.25" primaries, into a 3" y-collector, and then back down to 2.5" muffler after the merge. _________________

that'll slow the exhaust velocity down quite a bit and create more heat in the system.. but overall shouldn't hurt performance too much
iirc the LX9's Y pipes were 1 7/8" ID off the manifolds, pretty tiny but plenty for it's projected HP level. _________________

Im going to do something a little different with my manifold setup. Im going to use my lx9 front mani, along with a newer style 3400 rear manifold in the back with the cross over port welded closed(cleanly of course). That way im only flowing half the ammount of air through it as usual, so it shouldnt be too bad.
Then a 2 inch y pipe with a flex in between, merged into 2.75 mandrel all the way out the back. |

that makes no sence.. why would you use 2 un-matched exhaust manifolds? that could make one side of the engine run leaner than the other. Certainly not going to help.. _________________
