Hey everyone. I've been reading up all over the place about my Z and this seems like the best place to shoot the breeze and learn about my Cav.
Anyways, I have a 3-speed auto in my Z, it's got 178,000 miles on it, along with the engine. It's amazing, engine doesn't burn oil, and the transmission doesn't slip. However, the past few days, the transmission has been acting extremely weird. When cruising, it works just fine. But if I stop at a stop sign, the transmission sometimes acts like it drops into neutral. When I release the brakes and roll into the gas, the engine revs, but the car goes nowhere. About half of a second after I give it throttle, it shifts back into gear and the car lurches forward, like a lame neutral drop. But this doesn't happen all the time. I tried stopping many different ways, and couldn't figure out a pattern.
However, any time I slow down and make a 90 degree turn to the left, the transmission seems to jump between pulling and neutral. It's almost like the transmission's slipping, except it's either 100% grip or 100% coast. It's an extremely weird feeling. If I manually place the transmission into 1st gear, it does it, and when I have it in drive, it does it, but when I have it in second manually, it doesn't.
I've checked the fluid, and it's perfectly full, smells right, and isn't brown. But other than that, I'm not sure what to check. I read the transmission thread in this forum, and I think I'm going to check out the TV cable, and see if that helps. |

With that many miles, I would not be surprised if some of the bands were worn and lose inside the tranny. This could cause it to "fall" out of gear. Why not have a tranny shop take a look? They won't charge you to diagnose, or at least they shouldn't. _________________

| Hmm, never thought of doing that. I might have to make some phone calls. It's worth a shot. Thanks for the idea. |

He said he's checked the fluid and it's full.
The TH125 in my vert was doing the same thing and fluid was full and pink. I gave up trying to diagnose it and was planning on just replacing it. It also had around 170,000 miles on it.
I had theories and all those theories led to the same conclusion - it would be cheaper (and less of a PITA) to just get another lower mileage tranny that's known to be good. _________________

| The fluid looks good, but I'm going to do a change on it before I go and find myself a new tranny. If I do have to get one, it will be a five-speed. These three-speed automatics are just nasty. Any suggestions as to what car to get it out of? Mine is a late '92. |
