Out of a ~95 Astro van-

I joined the J booster bracket with the Astro bracket-

Test fit during the 2.2 removal-

I installed the booster upside down from the Astro configuration, just to save space on the side closest to the engine. The MC is in the same relative position as with the vacuum booster, but it looks so much cleaner. The plumbing will be pretty clean too, since its so close to the steering rack.

Looking good. Just one question: The point of doing that is ? Just for cleaner looks or help with stoping power too ?

It should help GREATLY with stopping power since it's using hydraulic assist instead of vac assist.

BTW James, I thought you were pulling that 2.2 out last week? Slacker.

Interesting to see What noticeable differences you'll see with this swap. The pedal feel will definitely be different.

This wil be one of my next mmods if it works out well. The brakes are still not where I'd like them to be with the STS swap

The top two reasons I did this- to get rid of the humongus vacuum booster, and the "originality" factor. I don't see there being too much of a pedal feel difference, maybe a bit quicker brake reaction. Most of what I've read from guys who have done it (mostly S-10s, and trail vehicles), say it feels like stock, but takes up alot less space. I could see it being beneficial if you had some really rough idle from a cam and didn't draw much vacuum at idle. But how often are you slamming on the brakes at idle? I may look into changing out the piston, or increasing the inlet pressure to see what happens, but I think it might be overkill on this size car.

I may get really creative and move the entire booster towards the strut tower and use a bellcrank/shaft to operate the piston. I don't know yet.

BTW- the 2.2 is out

Im lovin it!

Im new to these setups, so bare with me. Are there any other components? Or just the booster and master cylinder?

Im assuming the threaded line fittings are different too but that's easy enough to change.

This might be just what I need on my Z26 to give me more room for the wastegate/downpipe. I got 3" in there but it's very very tight and my wastegate is very close to the master cylinder.

I'll definately be keeping an eye on this thread. Make sure you share all the info once you are done

i always wanted to do that but the astro van i have still works the brakes always felt much nicer on the van though then the cavy. never realized it was through the power steering though, i thought it was a seperate pump.

didnt like the idea of manual brakes?

Actually, just the booster. I run an N body MC, but the stock J body MC will bolt right up as well. Yes, the N body MC fittings are different, I can't even remember what they are right now, I used adapters in them to get to 3/8-24IF when I threw it together last spring. The only other thing you'd need is the plumbing. This booster gets plumbed on the supply side of the power steering pump, daisychained in with the steering rack. So basically, three hoses (supply from pump to booster, from booster to rack, and booster return) and a tee in the return line to the pump.

Honestly, it never crossed my mind. Somehow I got this idea stuck in my head and went with it. I can't see manual brakes being an issue here though (as far as pressure and application goes). I know of at least one 3rd gen guy whos done it, and it was super clean.

This project won't be done until at least the springtime, after I get the 3400 in. I still have a ton of work in and around the engine compartment to do, and I only like making one trip to get things blasted and coated rather than little trips.

I've driven Astro Vans with this brake setup and I loved the feel of the brakes. Very snappy and a nice initial bite. I think this setup on a Cavalier would be amazing. I work at a powdercoater, have a welder, and a junkyard around the corner. I'm liking the idea that much.

Cahil, Any idea on the working pressure of the Astro pump vs. the J pump?

We had talked about it a few months ago . Looks nice and should save plenty of room over the massive stock booster. I still havn't gotten around to it (may never).

Not sure. I'll have to look into that. It would be some good info if for nothing at all but FYI.
