i bought a 95 grand am last nite for the motor it was cheap 200 and it was mine. the car is complete and runs. the only problem seems to be a bad head gasket on the rear cylinder head. previous owner says its leaking coolant. it don't mater about that as i'm going to rebuild the motor anyway. i may even get the motor setup for boost. i have been reading about the swap and everyone says you can't use the '00+ injectors, can i use the '95 injectors? if not i have a spare set from a 2.8 that are ohmed at 12 ohms, all of them. i know it's the small port design but it is a good base if i ever want to go with a '00+ 3400. does anybody got any ideas or advice it would be much appreciated. the car is suppose to arrive at my place this afternoon i will take pictures of the car when it arrives and post them tonite. i have all the install guide printed off of www.domesticcrew.com everything seems straight forward there. i don't know about the chip but it seems to me i could use the 2.8 chip for a little while and it will burn alittle lean at wot. if it don't work then i'll have to get a chip burned. i'm also going to have the stock 5 speed behind it with probably an updated diff. and a centerforce dual friction clutch.

Before anyone comes on here bashing the s.p. 3100, I want to say that they are an upgrade from the gen2 3.1. I put a '98 3100 in my Z24 a few years ago and it was a great swap. It doesnt make much power over the 3.1L but it does run much better and get great gas milage. Depending on the mileage you may not have to rebuild the engine. You can use the injectors currently on the 3100. Just take the injector harness from the gen2 3.1 and put it on the 3100. It will run just fine with the stock 2.8/3.1L tuning. My engine got 30+mpg when installed in my z24.

The cons:
Small port intakes
1mm Smaller intake valves than 00+ engines
Stamp steel rockers (not roller but still 1.6:1)
Log style rear manifold

Good luck with your swap. Just ask if you have any questions.

-Joseph

I have the exact same motor in mine

and it's a definite difference over the stock 2.8 (25hp on paper, which is like 20% gain)

eventually i would like to go for a 3400, at least i have all the parts i need now for that to work lol, it's just a matter of taking it out and dropping in the 3400, and getting the chip retuned

only thing, make sure you keep EVERYTHING from the 2.8 lol, i had a lot of set backs because i bought the car half-ass swapped, and didn't have any 2.8 parts

well as you can see i've had a very busy sunday. this motor is almost ready to be pulled out the only thing i have left to do is the very rear 2 bellhousing bolts 1 is a stud the other 1 goes in the reverse direction goes in from the motor side. the 2 fuel lines and power steer lines i'm going to take the lines off the rack. the 2 fuel lines have the quick disconnect fittings and my 89 doesn't mine screw on where should i cut the fuel lines? at or after the fittings? or can i just change where the lines screw into the fuel rail? as you can see to where the bolt is that i'm pointing at there is no idler pulley boss so i guess i have to search for a timing cover

a thought just came me can't i use all the power steer lines it has the same rack into it and www. domesticcrew.com says the best steel to use is from a 94 grand am with a 3100 in it well this is a 95 grand am with a 3100 in it thats my donor engine plus it looks like the same alternator as whats in my 89 or do i still have to put my 89 bracket on? thanks

10. Steel power steering line. Since you have to use your old CS130 style alternator, and bracket, you'll need to get a different steel power steering line that runs from the pump to the pressure hose. The one that works best is from a '94 Grand AM with a 3100. It has the right bends for a good fit around your old style alternator. Unfortunatly, this line won't directly fit with certain P/S pumps that have an electronically variable output (EVO) solenoid. Those pumps have an output that is at a 90* angle from the typical output. In that case you could rebend the line, but you run the risk of making it weak and having it break on you.

That PS line may work. You won't really know until you drop the engine in. If it looks like the one pictured on the DC site, try it. You deffinately have to use the alt. brackets from the 2.8/3.1L. They move the alt. forward and away from the firewall. I'm not sure if you can use the grandam altenator though. You also should grab the brake-booster vaccum hose. I believe it is a direct fit.

Good luck with the swap.

You could probably get away with running stock 3.1 injectors and a stock 3.1 tune on a small port 3100. It won't be perfect but the stock tune isn't either.

thats what i was thinking, but it's a 2.8, the same i think. the injectors are the exact same style as the 2.8, so i don't have to change them. i think someone on here they are slightly bigger in the way of flow. i think what was said was the 2.8s are 15# and the 3100 is 17# (16.8#), or something like that. and i was thinking of running the wot chip and let them know it's a 3100 if not i can still use the 2.8 chip and learn how to tune the computer which i'm not quite ready to do just yet. all though it is something i want to learn as i'm a electrical auto tech. once i get some time freed up i will be looking on here for the gear i need and a step by step how to, but thats not for a while yet.

One little corrrection to the above list.

In '96 the SP 3100 also received roller rockers. This doesn't change anything for the OP, at least it might not, since there have been reports of late '95 SP 3100s already being equipped with the roller rockers. The only way to know is to pull a rocker cover and inspect to be sure.
Also this seemed to happen evne more often and that would be that it seems sometime mid '95 the 3100 already had the alignment grooves cut into the heads for the roller rockers, so it may be just a matter of swapping rockers to the later roller rockers to free up a couple HP, and help lower oil temperatures.

The stock 3.1 chip (not sure about 2.8's, haven't datalogged one) are tuned rich, the VE change to the 3100 might put it right where it should be. All speculation untill datalogs are posted though...

there IS a stock GM OBD1 chip for the 3100 out there, nobody knows what code mask it is.. but i'm planning on finding one at the junk yard and posting it up in the tuning sticky. Hopefully before winter...
