Does anyone have a scanner for the OBD 1 systems?? What do you recommend as far as brands?? I want one, but dont have $1000 to spend on a Snap on scanner.

can't you pick up one at AutoZone for a decent price?
If not then get an ALDL cable and a laptop _________________

Yeah, but they are pretty crappy from what I have heard.
With the laptop idea...... what software do you need?? I dont want just a code reader. I want to be able to see the values that the sensors are putting out as well.

Hmmmm..... I would rather buy an inexpensive laptop. (something with a 166-500hz processor) And then get the software.
Thanks Dave,
Now I am on the search for a cheap laptop!

OK,... just out of curiosity,... what are the coloured wires in the aldl connector you need to jump for getting the codes on your dash lights.
On the how 2 pics,... I see and orange,.. green,... black,... white,... wires pokin out of the sides,.... now I pulled my aldl out to take a look,... and I see,.... orange,... blk/wht strp,... white/blk strp.
I'm guessing it's the blk and wht that need to be jumped.
reason I'm trying to figure this out,... I met a guy with a 94 grand prix,... 3.1,... and he needs to check the codes,... the aldl plug is the same but the 3 wires aren't all together in the corner,... 2 on the end and 1 a couple of notches down,.... his colours are black yellow and green?
and clues? _________________

Just figured i'd post this to let everyone know the spelling error... this morning i set a code 43...
| Quote: | | 43 Electronic Spark Control (ECS) circuit or Knock sensor (KS) circuit Check wiring and connectors form the knock sensor to the ESC controller or ECM for an open or short to ground; if necessary, reroute the harness away from other wires suck as spark plugs, etc. Replace the knock sensor |

I did get that code last night... it happens at idle but doesn't affect performance (weird right) I traced the wire and it gets to the ECM... go figure. there are no cuts or openings so it's not grouding itself. I'm going to get the new connector i sent you from rodney dickman. this way I know atleast that problem is solved. if i revv it from a stop, the light goes out.
When the lights on it retards timing to the effect that I register only 12in-hg of vacuum, instead of 22in-hg sounds pretty cool though. but once i revv it before i launch it goes away. go figure? _________________

| If you get the trouble code for the MAP Sensor, DO NOT replace the map sensor right away, well unless you have 3 or 4 lying around. This trouble code can be caused by your crappy old EGR, which this was in my case. Just thought Id leave this here for anyone that might need it or has as much bad luck as I do. |
