Hello everyone.
Does anyone in Ontario, Canada had troubles passing the inspection with a 2nd Gen Z24? Where I live, Bill 48 will be implanted by fall. This means annual smog tests & inspections for every 8 years and older vehicles.
So, am I right to fear for my Cavalier Z24? Will it be possible to improve the LB6 V6's emission system in order to exceed standards?

Is the air filthy in Quebec? I see they want $60 for your emissions test. WTF!!!!! Had mine done today (not ontario)for $15 and the folks doing it were helpful in assisting me pass unlike when they started the testing years ago and would look for any reason to fail you and justify their jobs.

This is for Ontario emission testing.

For my car all they need to test is the exhaust since our car's computer is older...

On-board diagnostic (OBD) testing is a computer-based emissions test that interacts with the manufacturer-installed computer that continuously monitors a vehicle’s emission components. When a vehicle’s OBD system detects an emissions related malfunction, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is stored in the on-board computer. The presence of a DTC indicates there is something wrong with the vehicle’s emissions control system and it needs to be repaired. The Drive Clean test equipment connects to the OBD computer and retrieves diagnostic information as part of the vehicle emissions inspection.

On-board diagnostic computers became standard in Canadian light-duty vehicles in 1998. Drive Clean will continue to use a tailpipe test for light-duty vehicles from 1988 to 1997 model years to ensure that grossly polluting older vehicles are identified and repaired. Heavier light-duty SUVs or pickup trucks (3,856 – 4,500 kg) of model years 1988 to 2006 will also receive a tailpipe test as they are not equipped with OBD technology.

All I would say is change your spark plugs check all of your sensors and maybe replace your O2 sensor.

My mom's 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier failed the emission test so her boyfriend drove her car on the highway with the heat full blast for 2 hours and then went to the emission test and it passed it..

weird eh?

lol, why did he think the heat being on full blast would help anything?

OP, give it a good tuneup. It should pass.

Yeah. But the thing is: the check engine light is only on when I turn on the ignition, then disappears only after startup. Nothing else is lit.

This car is my legacy, the only thing I got left from my uncle... Who was a great fan of muscle cars and mechanics (so am I). I fear to lose it, more than anything else... That is why I want to keep up with the ever increasing emission standards.

Its an older car, they have to be somewhat lax or 75% of the cars on the road would fail. The way the laws are around here if you have a 4 year old car they could find something to fail you if they really wanted to.

This is the first I've heard of a new law making OLDER vehicles go through emissions. Normally they make it easier for older vehicles to pass inspection.

I think it will be ok. I'd be more worried about them all rusting out at some point

Welcome to Quebec my friend. They want us to get rid of our stylish antiques to pay $30k for unattractive cars... Money is their only ******* motivation to dare doing something like that.

This is no concern for me. My '89 spent 8 years on the grass and the floors aren't even rusted. The only rust that's noticeable is in the suspension/wheel wells area...

I do not know how people fail. My car passed with a 3400 swap and no emission control devices at all. Even with the stock 2.8 I did not have any emission control devices and my car passed. I have my emissions license and almost everyone passes as long as everything is working or almost everything. It is not hard to diagnose why someone fails if you look at the emissions report paper.

That's why I have my mine registered as classic. That way I can turn it into the biggest possible piece of crap around spewing out sewage and black smoke

In ontario if you have a check engine light they won't even test the car! Automatic fail. Anything 87 or newer must be tested so there's no fudging a classic status.if you do not have emission components such as egr fail for sure. The ontario government is trying to push all older cars off the road. Passing etest is a much bigger thing than passing a safety check.
