My gf's 89 z 2.8 auto gets horrible gas mileage. We're talking anywhere between 12-18 miles a gallon. Any suggestions? no check engine light on.

its a 2.8 there is your first problem , Regular maintenence should help alot, but check your wires and spark plugs, Air filter, change the oil...if its got alot of K add some lucas oil treatment its awsome in engines. brings is back to life. Other than that check everything over.
plugs & wires.

18 city is normal if your running it hard. should be getting over 20 highway though.
those were both highway measurements.
Check out your exhaust system, particularly around the manifold / catalytic converter...when there's a leak in those areas, gas mileage will be a dog. I used to pay around $10 a day for my 2.2L automatic Cavy back in high school, I drove less than 30km a day. It was due to the exhaust system leaking like a bitch.

Redicilous when you think about it...$10 a day for a 2.2L Auto, lmao...
fuel filter too, alot of people forget about that.

I know. My 1992 z clone 2.2l 5 speed is insane! I am a delivery driver and a "cruiser", and the car barely uses any gas! I usually drive around 50 miles a day (70 on the weekends- cruising), and only fill up once a week!
Also Check your EGR, PCV, and Vac leaks. They are killers! And my cavi is going to be a Z clone after this weekend  we should start our own website  anyways good luck hopefully you will figure out whats wrong with it :D
The biggest factors for gas milage is your o2 sensor and your air filter. New plugs and wires have very very little to do with your gas milage. If your cat is plugged it will blow your o2 sensor within a few miles. So make sure you have a good free flowing cat on there then change out your o2 sensor and get a good air filter in there and you should see a pretty signifigant increase in gas milage. Fuel filter is another big factor as well.. Change that out too if it hasn't been changed in awhile.
