crappy paint job, i want my money back

i went to maaco and paid 1,190.00 for a paint job. next tuesday im going to have the flaws fixed for the 3rd time. my doorjams' paint is flaking off, and so is the bumper paint. there is already little rust spots on the trunk lid. my mirrors are horible. it looks like the paint was watered down and there watermarks all over. if im not satisfied this time i was going to call their corporate office and request my money back. if they dont, i wanted to take them to small claims court and get my money back for everything, even the days i had to take off of work because my car was being worked on again. what do you guys do think i should do?

That sentence sums up the problem. Problem 1, you got ripped good. Problem 2, never go to Maaco for paint jobs. They hire idiots who know shit about automotive painting and don't care about quality work (they probably don't even know what a real paint job looks like). If I were you, I'd try every method in the book to get a refund for their shit job, if that must involve courts then by all means. Once you have the money back, save up a bit more and go shop for quotes from some reputable body shops. Don't always think you have to go to big name brand places, sometimes the guy who can give you a showroom quality mirror finish paint job is the guy working out of a small shop most people have never heard of. Trust me on this, I've been screwed over with paint too, rust coming back within a month, laziness in the work was evident, etc. Had a door problem a short while ago, edge of the door was dented and pushed in, and the door was kinda warped and wouldn't close properly. I went to a small shop a short drive from my house and my car was done 2 days later and you can't even tell there was ever a problem with the door.
See less See more
try to find a small unadvertised shop, they seem to do the best work

I know of three in my town, youd never guess these people had a paintshop in the garage if it wasnt for the fact someday they left thier door open and you see the stainless steel walls and lightings heh
ya macco is no good fo ranything cept getting a paintjob right before u sell ur car.... but then thats just mean to the nice people that bought your car.
we do all the body and paint work in the backyard...

but i realize not everyone has that capability, but ya the small time shops are the best! you did get ripped off
please tell me that was for their top of the line one where they do the base coat and clear coat then i can understand the price my mom got that one and hasnt really had any problems now if u payed that much from one of thier enamels then u got ripped

Hey, I take offence to that...I'm a painter who used to work at a Maaco. Of course, I didn't last long there, since you are right in sayin that they don't really care much for quality. I quit cuz they were givin me a hard time about takin too long to paint cars. Well to that I said "if I didn't have to keep sendin the cars back to the bodyman or prepper to fix their fuck-ups, then they would get done a whole lot faster :D It got to the point where I was practically preping the whole car again in my paint-booth cuz the car wasn't sanded properly, which is a BIG no no :nono:
hey kuz where do you work now?
if its still at a body shop i would like a paint job please, one of those heart filled ones would be nice lol.
i want a new paint job, my biggest problem is finding someone who doesnt wanna charge me my left testical, and will still do a good job
( the only place in town that i know will do an amazing job charges, i belive 2500 but most of that is just cause there known to be the best)
my car needs a lil body work then a paint job but i'm too poor :(
i paid for a color change, them to sand my top of the car, hood, and trunk lid. i paid for the additional clear coat, not the integrated. then i paid for the paint job. i had to get new taillights because they painted my old ones, then they painted every bit of rubber around every window!! they asked if i wanted teh black around the windows painted. i thought they meant that black bar inbetween the sid window and the quarter window. WRONG!!! now i have to replace the thing on the side of my side windows. and the paint is chipping off of the black rubber and taking the paint off of the window along with it!!!!
they shoudl have known better than to paint hte rubber u can get them for that

 I wouldn't call where I'm workin now much of a bodyshop  We don't even have a spray booth, but I make do with what we have. We do mostly Basecoat/Clearcoat jobs, that way if I find a little dirt here and there, I can just polish it out :) . We charge about $1500 for a paint job depending on how much bodywork is needed. With the right inspiration, I can give anyone a paint job that looks like they spent $10,000 for $2,500.
my buddy just got a paint gun its pretty nice ...and i wanna take it out to the junk yard and paint it ...then just buff and polish it to see how ican do ..no the whole car just like a quarterpannel or something .....how hard is it to do this ? anything special b-sides the gun and compressor......also when they painted your car did you get teh door jams hood and trunk jams painted?
i never got the jambs painted. if i can get a hold of a digital camera, i will take pics of the messed up spots. its a lot of pics if i do it
I feel your pain man....same thing happened to me in 2000. I paid 1850cnd for thier top end job. I realized that maeco is maeco but I thought there top end work would be just as good as anyone elses. Wow was I wrong. They painted everything, including my exhaust, painted the rubber, the glass of the mirros, the plastic molding around the car that is flaking away everytday. They forgot to do my doorjams and in my trunk lid. On top o eveything, the car was a complete mess, dust everywhere. I ended up taking there three times, because it kept rusting every two weeks. Finally, I told them if I had to bring it back becuase of rust one more time, I would start reaising shit. And then they finally did a good job. But still, the paint has waterspots and it is spider craking on the hood, and clearcoat is missing....its just fucked up all together. But I learned my lesson I guess....I hate to think it about it, gets me soo mad
i know how yah feel, 4 months ago i brought my j in to have a few spots on the doors and a couple under the rubber windshield strip sanded down and repainted. Just a few weeks ago the same damn spots started re-surfacing...whatta a waste of 500cdn. so i went back to the shop that painted my car, blasted the scrawny little fuck that did the work and told him that if he didn't give me back atleast 250...i was gonna kick his ass all over the place. It works wonders when you're face to face with somebody and your tellin them they are in the process of catching a beating...anyway i ended up getting 250 back...

Sask, Its not impossible for the average person to do their own body work. Just very time consuming when you dont have an air compressor or the professional tools.

Hell, I dont even have a GARAGE to work in and I still tackle stuff that I shouldn't.. But I look at it this way, if I DON'T at least try, the car is going to rot away and continue to look terrible.

I painted it myself two or three years ago and it needs to be done again.

"High miles" means you wore clean through the paint..
