Exhaust sound question

Ok this question might seem a lil dumb but i'm a little confused too. I hear all these 4 bangers with the fart cannons on whatever the car and it seems that the higher the rpm they get to the louder their exhaust gets. Whereas with my car after about 3000 rpms, i dont hear the exhaust at all, or very little with my magnaflow muffler. Is this the muffler? Or the engine doing this? Or am i just crazy and this is a stupid thread?

my flowmaster is the same way. on the low end its wicked loud but at higher rpm's its alot quieter. hehe when i drive by cops i downshift so i dont get tickets
mines the same, higher rpm's = less sound... guess its just the air coming through so quickly, it doesnt have the time to rumble through..?
it's all about camshafts. most 4 cyl engines are geared more for high end torque and hp so the engine arent' gasping for air like ours in the upper rpms. thats why our engines get quiet. or at least that what i think the reason is.
Mines pretty loud at the top of the RPM range...but its also straight thru.
mine gets louder at higher rpm
but i have a 2.0l 4 cylinders
I think the reason it gets quieter up high is because as more exhaust gases go through the muffler, there's more gas to expand and bounce around off the baffles, canceling the shock waves entering the muffler from the pipe. That's my theory, anyway. In a straight muffler, there aren't really any baffles, just perforations usually, and it's a straight shot.

By the way, do any of you have a problem getting an inspection sticker because of your mufflers? My guy said he'd be able to "overlook" a Flowmaster. Ricers have straight friggin pipes. What a jackass. :x

damn, i thought it was just mine that did that. Mine is insanely loud right about 2600 but it seems to get quite a bit quieter above 3000.

still sounds good tho 8)
a performance muffler won't fail you during an imspection. as long as there are no leaks you should be fine.

You can tell him to "overlook" the finger you can give him and tell him to inspect it anyway. They won't cause any emissions problems and like EasyE said as long as everything else is in good condition you'll be alright.

That's what I tried to tell the dickhead. Pompous fat bastard that he is... :guns:
heh thank god we dont have any kind of smog test or immissions here in good ol' fayette county or i woudl of failed along time ago
haha good thing i live in meadow lake... they don't give a shit bout nuttin 8)
My dual magnaflow is really bassy at about 1800, but roars best at about 5800, which is wierd, considering stock redline is 5700, and now i can hit 6300 without over-reving it.
my dynomax is loudest between 2000 and 2800 its a straight through pipe
My 95 mustang gt has a mac off road x pipe and flowmaster american thunder cat back. It has a nice rumbleat idle, it kinda growls from 2000-3500 rpm, and 3500+ it just screams, i love it :)
my '90 z rumbles a idle and quiets down aroun 3500 then gets loud again around 4500-5000. i also run straight thru with a y-pipe out to two 4.5" ractive tips on a 3.1 6cyl
yrah my magaflow is the same it is loudest at 1500 and the stats dieing out at 3500 rpm
also the faster you go the more the sound travels behind you and you dont hear it as much as if your going slower
