help me know what to look for!

When I am looking for motors at wrecking yards.... motors being more specifically a 3400, what should I look for? Are there any key points on the 3400 that I should look at to see if they are damaged/broken/cracked etc? Leak points? What makes a wrecking yard motor a good or a bad one? Please, I would like as much help as possible.
Thanks ahead of time.

Well you can tell if the car is in the yard due to the engine or a wreck...

i mean anything specificly about the 3400 that i should know, problem areas that the engine might have.
doesnt anyone have information on this? or does everyone hate me?
some sort of info would be great.
thanks again
well you should look for basic things.. like pull the plugs... check em out for oil blow by... stuff like that...
do you think it would be a wise idea to machine the heads while the motor is out of the car?
also does anyone know what a cam regrind would cost somewhere around in ontario? or even where i could start to look for a place that does it?
thanks
