Sorry to ask a question THATS been asked before, but I recently got an ‘88 z24. And long story short the engine is eventually going to have to be replaced and I would like to know the best fitting alternative engine I could use for this baby.

Hi and welcome to V6Z24.

How many miles are on your car? Is it a 5spd?
You can use a 2.8L like is in your car. Or a 3.1L from another car. Transverse, front-wheel drive. Either of these will bolt right in. And likely run perfectly fine with your ECM.
Finding a good low'ish mile engine may be difficult though. A re-manufactured engine is likely your best bet. You could have the original engine rebuilt.

The 3100, 3400 can be used. You'll need all the bits and pieces to install one of these. See the 3400 swap thread in the How To section; 3400 Engine Swap.
Other options for the engine are possible, but far more in depth.
