Does adding a muffler increase horsepower?

yes it can, depends what kind of muffler
yup, not by much, youll get more out of a catback system
i'm gettin a flowmaster, and i'm puttin a glasspack where the cat is suppose to be
i gained 10 hp just by adding a flowmaster to mine. those are true dyno numbers too no bs.
A muffler by itself won't do all that much except make it nice and loud. A full cat-back (or better yet, slap headers on if you can find them and do the whole damn thing) will add more, but still not the best. If you want to really take advantage of a free-flowing exhaust system, you need a good intake and you need the engine to rev.Once it gets revving and sucking in air, it will really go. Take the SCCA touring car series, for example. The cars run stock drivetrains, more or less stock bodies (minus the aerodynamics), and actually run stock engine internals except for the Mazda Protege. They all make over 200hp I believe. The BMW 325 took a 70hp+/- leap over stock just from a racing intake, free breathing exhaust, and recalibrated computer. Do it up right and you'll some power gain.

Note: the trick to the touring car series is handling, though. The manufacturers spend thousands and thousands of dollars developing aerodynamics and suspension components. Keep that in mind if you watch a race or two. It's good racing.

doode i got 10 hp from JUST a flowmaster so that aint bad if u ask me...
a muffler does not add hp it will increase flow u would have gained that 10 hp by just cutting ur old one off

thats like saying a turbo doesnt add hp it just uncreases airflow. i believe you are incorrectin your statement. the flowmaster increases backpressure so the exhaust is actually sucked out of the enigne.
doens't it decrease backpressure? and doens't decreasing the backpressure mean more hp??
Decreasing the backpressure does in fact mean more horsepower.........but you will see it in the high RPM's. By decreasing backpressure you will lose torque though......which is one of the best things about our cars..

Btw......did anyone else find the title of this post funny?? :D
see my post of CFD made about 6-7 months ago.. should explain exhaust dynamics to a 'T'

if you add 2.25 piping would you lose torque?
stu: your muffler must have been real real bad! :D
